Most actual mermaid lore is that mermaids would enchant sailors with their beauty and/or song, causing ship's crew members to walk off their decks into the ocean and drown, and/or causing entire shipwrecks. Basically, they led human sailors to their watery deaths.





The lore that depicts mermaids as more belevolent creatures, still tends to end with men drowning - a mermaid sqeezing the life out of a man who was lost at sea that the mermaid was trying to rescue - some believed they would forget or not understand that humans couldn't breathe underwater, and inadvertenly kill them.
